Call for Organized Sessions & Workshop Abstracts

General Information

The World Seagrass Conference and International Seagrass Biology Workshop are flagship events for the global seagrass community and are supported by the World Seagrass Association. This event is the only international meeting specifically tailored to seagrass scientists, professionals, students, and NGOs.

The 14th International Seagrass Biology Workshop (ISBW14) and the World Seagrass Conference 2020 (WSC2020) will be held in Annapolis, MD, USA from 9 to 14 August 2020. The two will be combined into one week-long event, with two days of conference style talks (10-11 August) and two days of workshops (13–14 August) separated by one day of field trips (12 August).

Researchers and practitioners are invited to submit organized session abstracts for WSC 2020 and workshop abstracts for ISBW14 at this time. Organized sessions and workshops should be seen as a unique opportunity to foster collaborations, advance seagrass science, and to disseminate and/or teach new skills. We welcome all abstracts that are relevant to seagrass/SAV science, conservation, and management, but applications that demonstrate a tie-in with the overall theme of the conference will be prioritized. “Signs of Success” is the overarching theme for ISBW14 and WSC2020. The theme is motivated by the recent resurgence of submerged aquatic vegetation (SAV) in the Chesapeake Bay, USA, and the global need for bold and sustained management actions to propel other coastal ecosystems along a similar trajectory. “Signs of Success” should not be limited to restored ecosystems, but also include those successfully preserved from human impacts.

Please submit your organized session and workshop abstracts to isbw14abstracts@gmail.com by 1 December 2019. All session and workshop applications will be reviewed by the ISBW14 Scientific Committee. Please ensure you include all of the required information (listed below) in your session or workshop submission. Please submit everything in a single, attached word or pdf document. The subject line of your email submission should begin with either "Session Abstract" or "Workshop Abstract".

Sessions

WSC2020 sessions will be 90 minutes and may include standard 15-minute presentations, lightning talks, and poster presentations. Sessions will be held on 10 and 11 August, 2020.

Session abstracts must be submitted, via email, to isbw14abstracts@gmail.com by December 1, 2019. Please submit all of the required information in an attached word or pdf document, and begin your email subject line with "Session abstract".

Session abstract applications must include:

  • Session Title

  • Name, title, institution, email address, phone number, and address for all session conveners
  • Session Abstract (maximum 250 words)
  • Session teaser (optional, maximum 3 sentences, may be posted on the website or used in conference publications)

Workshops

ISBW14 workshops are allocated in 90-minute sections, and you may propose multiple, consecutive time slots. For example, there will be three workshop sessions each on 13 and 14 August, with time slots separated by coffee breaks and lunch. You may propose to hold your workshop during one, two, or three consecutive time slots in one day, or up the 6 time slots across both days.

The format of each workshop will be determined by the workshop proposers. To benefit participants, all workshops should be interactive, participative, and enable participants to learn new skills and acquire knowledge. To this end, we recommend that the number of powerpoint presentations be limited.

Any type of workshop will be considered for ISBW14, with examples including: training workshops, writing workshops, and data mining workshops. Workshops are, however, subject to availability of resources and facilities. The facilities available for ISBW14 are seminar/classroom style rooms that can accommodate between 35 and 80 people, depending on room configuration. These rooms allow for flexible configurations with movable tables and chairs, and each room can be equipped with projectors and computers for presentations.

All workshops should aim for practical outputs that could advance seagrass science and research capacity, and foster deeper collaborations on research, conservation and communication (e.g., peer-reviewed paper, learning new skills, policy statement, new initiatives, media output).
